The Making Of The Japan Photo Show

I was invited to throw an art show at VIP Smog Center Grand Opening ceremony a few months back and I told him I couldn't do it since it was such a last minute. Some how Kevin (owner) pushed it back but not for me and this time I have enough time to get prints and frames together. I invited David a.k.a Bojangles to join me since we've been talking about doing a show together for years ya'll, years! And we're finally doing it. David recently went to Japan as well, his photography captures the car culture in japan as for mine, it's more of the Japanese people in general. It was a great mix. Me and David got a great start at getting the prints done and IKEA frames was so available and affordable we bought a box worth in one day. Two days before the show I called Kevin to see how's everything going and he said "a mess." Not exactly what I wanted to hear. I stopped by the shop and he wasn't lying, it was a mess, like nothing was done, no evidence of him preparing the shop for the Grand Opening. So while we're standing around talking about a Plan B if we fail to get it done but Kevin is a whole different kind of monster. It's a good and bad thing, he definitely inspired me because he doesn't take NO for answer, even if its Fate herself, he would not settle for a no. His style of getting things done may not be the healthiest but that dude is fucking relentless! He WILL get it done even if it means working nearly 24 hours. So anyways, one day before the show Kevin wants to fucking renovate the gallery, are you fucking kidding me!?! So anyways, we disagreed but David and I supported his decision and worked our ass off to get things done. As soon as we started clearing up all the junk in the gallery. We loaded it up with large amount of wood from Home Depot. He hired a flat bed two truck for them shits. Saturday morning we cleaned up, painted the wall, put them heavy as wood on the wall. And also building a wall behind the sink from scratch! He took the floor panels and created a wall haha. Kevin kept coming up with ideas while rebuilding this damn place and I'm over there like "ideas, ideas, NO IDEAS please!" cuz I Know that'll just kill us haha. The sun had set, Kevin looked over at me, "you believe me now? I told you I can get this done." I never said it was impossible but fuck man, imagine what he can do if he can do this in 24 hours. Oh yeah, Kevin finally bought a fucking door for the bathroom, at 8PM on a Saturday night.

After our short meeting we spent Friday night clearing up the space.

Yup, that's a bed.

Doing everything last minute making every minute crucial and stress level high. Kevin maintained his composure the whole time, till we got to Home Debot and the forklift driver was on a lunch break so we had to carry those wood ourselves. Oh Kevin rented a fucking flatbed.

I took the time to go through David's photos since I haven't seen them.

I woke up pretty early Saturday morning, had a big breakfast knowing there will be alot of movement. David had to be at his friends funeral so he couldn't be there in the morning to help. Hats off to David for being strong and composed, he said good bye to his fucking friend and came to help like nothing ever happened. He didn't get much sleep though, so he was extremely tired but carried on anyways. Mad proud of David for all his hard work and sacrifices. And he's going back to Japan this month! He managed his time and money very well.

Well, the renovation started late on a Saturday! We spent a lot of our time clearing out the space and waited for the handy man Paul and a couple of others to show up to get work started. While Paul and Kevin put them heavy wood on the wall I was on the opposite end painting the shits. Paint tried up pretty quick and was able to put up my photos. David arrived late after noon and went straight to work. Slowly but surely things were looking good, Kevin kept looking over at me and says "Watch, we're gonna fucking work a miracle"  and by the evening time he looked over at me and said to me, "see?! I told you I can make this happen." I kept talking shit as usual but hats off to Kevin, mad props homie.

David showed up and picked the hardest part of the job. Carry that shit up wasn't easy.
